SUMMARY:Primary Care Psychiatry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is an all-day\, in-person training.    \n\n\n\nThis workshop will equip PAs and NPs at all stages in their careers with skills sets to confidently diagnose and manage prevalent mental health conditions. The focus will be on evidence-based pharmacological interventions and the most recent advancements in the field of psychopharmacology. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be delivered through a blend of enlightening lectures and engaging interactive discussions\, providing participants with a robust foundation in current best practices\, evaluation techniques\, and treatment options for common behavioral and mental disorders. \n\n\n\nUpon completion\, participants will be better prepared to handle behavioral and emotional health problems in their day-to-day practice and be equipped to apply learned knowledge in their primary practice settings. \n\n\n\nObjectives for the day include the following: \n\n\n\n\n– Assess\, differentiate\, and diagnose psychiatric disorders commonly encountered in primary care.\n\n\n\n– Prepare effective plans to diagnose\, treat\, and manage common mental and behavioral health conditions seen in primary care.\n\n\n\n– Recognize when to consult and when referrals are necessary.\n\n\n\n– Identify new and emerging trends in psychiatric medicine.\n\n\n\n– Devise strategies to help patients overcome barriers to change in relation to disease management\, including cultural competency\, literacy skills and access to services or care.

SUMMARY:Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. \n\n\n\nSUMMARY:  \n\n\n\nThis 3-hr hands-on and skills-based workshop at South College in Asheville will teach learners the fundamentals and basic skills of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS). The primary purpose of this educational activity is to provide an overview of the general physics\, knobology\, and to develop a systematic approach to utilize POCUS into the modern medical practice. The workshop will provide an introduction to POCUS techniques\, imagery\, and equipment. \n\n\n\n At the end of this workshop\, learners will be able to:  \n\n\n\n\n– Identify the utility of ocular ultrasound in a patient presenting with a visual complaint. \n\n\n\n– Demonstrate the ability to perform cardiac point of care ultrasound to assess for a pericardial effusion and signs of right heart strain.\n\n\n\n– Differentiate between the aorta\, IVC\, and bowel on point of care ultrasound\, and describe ultrasound findings consistent with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. \n\n\n\n– Identify scenarios in which point of care renal ultrasound is useful and appropriate\, and differentiate between mild\, moderate\, and severe hydronephrosis on ultrasound imaging.\n\n\n\n– Demonstrate the ability to recognize lung sliding on point of care ultrasound as part of the assessment for pneumothorax.  \n\n\n\n– Demonstrate how POCUS can be utilized as a tool to enhance care in rural settings.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFEES: \n\n\n\n$400  ($300 for NCAPA Members | $150 for NCAPA Student Members)

SUMMARY:2024 PA Day at the Legislature
DESCRIPTION:PA Day at the NC Legislature\, held on May 15\, 2024 from 9am-2pm\, is NCAPA’s annual advocacy day where practicing PAs\, PA students\, and PA advocates meet with legislators at the NC General Assembly in Raleigh\, NC.  \n\n\n\nThe 2023 PA Day at the Legislature was one of the largest PA days to date. A record amount of 82 PAs and PA students traveled to Raleigh for the event. NCAPA hopes to continue this momentum this year. \n\n\n\nNCAPA invites all NCAPA Members and Student Members to meet with legislators and your representatives\, with the goal of sharing information about PAs and their scope of practice\, while advocating for the protection and enhancement of PA rights within the state.

SUMMARY:Student Medical Challenge Bowl
DESCRIPTION:NCAPA is excited to announce our annual Student Medical Challenge Bowl! This is a great way to review PANCE content and connect with fellow PA students across the state.  \n\n\n\nThings to Remember\n\n– Competition is inter-collegiate: to the extent possible\, each team will consist of students from every PA program in North Carolina. Teams are determined ahead of time\, based on intended attendees.\n\n\n\n– Responses to all questions require a question prefix (e.g. “What is… or Who is…”). Only one response per question per team.\n\n\n\n– Questions must be answered within 10 seconds\, and points are deducted for incorrect answers. Teams “buzz-in” to answer questions as a group. The team that accumulates the most points wins.\n\n\n\n– Register by Wednesday\, June 7. There are spaces available for only 6 students from each PA program in North Carolina\, so be sure to sign up early.
