It is an honor to be a candidate for President of NCAPA. For nearly 2 years, I have had the tremendous honor of serving as a Director-at-Large. During this time, I participated in developing our strategic plan and in refreshing our mission and vision statements. I have also connected with legislators and currently serve as Chair of the Policy and Legislative Taskforce. I look forward to the opportunity of continuing to serve and lead NCAPA.
18 years ago, I first had the opportunity to call myself a PA. Since then, I practiced in outpatient internal medicine and urgent care before transitioning into a hospitalist role. I have continued clinical practice as a hospitalist for more than 12 years at the ECU Health Medical Center. Additionally, I have also continued to grow in other areas of medicine beyond direct patient care. In 2016, I was chosen to become the Assistant Director for Advanced Clinical Practice. In this role, I had clinical oversight of over 80 PAs & NPs. I was able to create and expand multiple service lines for the organization, which required multidisciplinary collaboration with executives and physician and nursing leaders. I was also able to create student rotations across these service lines. For the last four years, I have served as the Medical Director for our system’s Patient Transfer Center. As the first PA in our system in a Medical Director role, I lead system-level change in caring for our patients by improving patient logistics and hospital operations.
As a PA in a leadership role, I advocate for the profession and exemplify the value of PAs in a healthcare system. To aid in developing the necessary leadership skills, I have participated in various courses including the NC Medical Society’s KIPL Leadership College. I also hold an MBA from ECU, along with a Leadership in Organizations certificate.
Healthcare in our state faces challenges on many fronts, including financial uncertainty and legislative complexity. NC PAs have their own aspects of these challenges including OTP legislation and title change. As we continue to strive toward the betterment of our profession, NCAPA’s mission (to strengthen the PA profession in North Carolina through advocacy, education, and support to improve healthcare for all patients) is our guiding principle and perpetual pursuit. I look forward to the opportunity, if elected as President, to continue serving NCAPA in fulfilling our mission.
For the consideration of the NCAPA membership, and at the request of the Nominating Committee, I present my qualifications for the position of NCAPA Treasurer.
I have been a member of NCAPA since I graduated from the Wake Forest University PA program in 2008. During that time, I have held many leadership positions including membership in the Government Affairs Committee, Treasurer of the PAC, NC Delegate to the AAPA House of Delegates, Director-at-Large, and most recently, Treasurer.
During my time as Treasurer, I have worked closely with other Board members and staff to maintain the transparent procedures for managing NCAPA finances that were established by my predecessors. This includes monthly reconciliation of revenue and expenditures, review of unanticipated spending, assistance with annual budgeting, and assurance of proper financial checks and balances. In my presentations to the Board and membership, I have attempted to enhance the clarity and accessibility of complex accounting practices and have received compliments on this particular skill. Most importantly, my financial recommendations are always rooted in the mission of NCAPA: to strengthen the PA profession in NC through advocacy, education, and support to improve healthcare for all patients.
I am humbled by the confidence expressed by the Nominating Committee in recommending me for another term as Treasurer. I hope I can count on the additional vote of confidence from the membership and would be honored to continue serving my state and profession in this role.
I am honored to have been nominated for this position with the North Carolina Academy of PAs. I have been a career-long supporter of PAs in my communities and abroad, and I have had the opportunity to serve in various volunteer leadership roles across organizations for the past several years. I helped the South Carolina Academy of PAs draft successful OTP legislation in 2018 and 2019. I advocated for PA educational programs across the state of South Carolina, and I organized the first all-PA-programs collaborative in 2019, bringing together academic and clinical leaders across the state. In Virginia, I was fortunate to join a thriving state academy and reinforce partnerships with the Medical Society of Virginia, the VAPA, and the AAPA. In 2021, I also helped draft successful OTP legislation for the state, leading to the first independent practice regulations for PA practicing as medical examiners. Additionally, I helped organize and draft several widely published PA-positive brochures, infographics, and messages dispelling myths regarding the PA profession held by patients, providers, and employers across the state.
I have a strong dedication to both clinical practice and PA medical education. I have held academic and leadership positions with Presbyterian College, the University of Lynchburg, and now, Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC. I have held clinical positions in orthopedic surgery and primary care. I am on staff at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, NC, with Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. In the past, I have held clinical positions at Carolina Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Associates in Spartanburg, SC, the Good Shepherd Free Medical Clinic in Clinton, SC, and the Free Clinic of Central Virginia in Lynchburg, VA. I was also the lead clinician and founding provider of the Bedford Free Clinic in Bedford, VA, an expansion of services from the Free Clinic of Central Virginia.
I view this opportunity to serve the NCAPA as a Board member with great respect and humility. If elected, I will strive to continue to champion progressive action for the PAs of North Carolina that increases access to quality, safe, and effective healthcare for North Carolina patients.
Thank you for your consideration.
As a PA in North Carolina, I am committed to advocating for three key principles.
First, I firmly believe in supporting the implementation of Optimal Team Practice, which empowers PAs to practice to the full extent of their education and training. By removing unnecessary barriers and expanding our scope of practice, we can enhance access to quality healthcare for all North Carolinians.
Second, I recognize the importance of embracing diversity in healthcare. I will actively promote inclusivity and equity by advocating for diverse representation in the PA profession and ensuring culturally sensitive care for patients from all backgrounds. By fostering an inclusive environment, we can provide better healthcare outcomes for everyone in our diverse community.
Third, to provide the best possible care, PAs must keep up to date with the latest advancements in medicine and healthcare delivery to provide the best possible care. I am committed to continuous professional development, engaging in lifelong learning, and actively participating in professional organizations to stay familiar with emerging research and practices. By staying relevant, we can deliver high-quality care that meets the evolving needs of our patients.
In summary, as a PA in North Carolina, I am dedicated to advocating for Optimal Team Practice, embracing diversity, and staying relevant in an ever-changing healthcare landscape. Together, we can improve healthcare access, enhance patient outcomes, and build a healthier and more equitable North Carolina.
I am asking for your support to represent the NCAPA as a Director-at-Large on the Board of Directors. I have been a member of NCAPA for the entirety of my clinical career in emergency medicine, initially in Greensboro and now in Raleigh, following the completion of my PA program more than five years ago. This is an exciting and pivotal time in our profession, and I believe that current and prior leadership experiences would make me a strong addition to the NCAPA Board.
I have had the opportunity to serve on several boards in myriad roles. As a PA student, I served on the Student Academy Board of Directors as Chief Delegate of the student delegation to the AAPA House of Delegates (HOD). After graduation, I was appointed to the AAPA Constituent Relations Work Group for two consecutive terms. During my last year as a committee Chair, CRWG was assigned 37 policies by the House Officers for a 5-year policy review. As Chair, I worked closely with AAPA staff, CRWG members, and other collaborating groups to complete a timely and thorough analysis of all assigned policies. Most recently, I completed four years of Board service on the LGBT PA Caucus Board of Directors, most recently in the role of President, and five years on the GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality Board of Directors as the Vice President of Membership and Development.
Over the last few years, I have engaged with NCAPA through multiple initiatives – as a DE&I Taskforce member in 2020 and as an HOD delegate for 2020-2021. Currently, I am serving as the Chair of the Marketing Work Group.
Although I have only been a PA for a short time, I have more than 10 years of professional experience in business and marketing from my time at Apple, Inc. and other PR and marketing entities. I would be honored to serve as an active, engaged, and dedicated member of the Board, if elected. Thank you for your consideration.
I am very honored to be a candidate for the position of NCAPA Nominating Committee Member-at-Large. Even since before attending PA school, I have been invested in the growth and development of the PA profession.
A long-time resident of the triangle, I attended UNC for undergrad before working at UNC Cancer Hospital as a mammographer. I then attended Duke’s PA program, where I fell in love with hospital medicine and was accepted to the Center for Advanced Practice Hospitalist Fellowship. Upon completion of this fellowship, I began clinical practice in inpatient oncology at Levine Cancer Institute.
During my time at Levine, I was the first Inpatient Clinical Lead for the Solid Tumor Oncology Advanced Practice Providers (APP). I was also appointed the APP Team lead for the Goals of Care clinical optimization project and created and developed the first Solid Tumor Oncology Education Rounds and the Hematology/Oncology APP Fellowship Lecture Series.
Pursuing my love of teaching, I transitioned into academia in the Fall of 2020 at High Point University’s PA program. While at HPU, I served in a variety of roles including course director, lab instructor, and academic advisor. I also continued to work clinically with Levine Cancer Institute and Carolinas Digestive Health Associates. During my tenure at HPU, I was appointed the first Chair of DE&I Committee for the Department of PA Studies. In addition, I was able to serve on the DEI committee for the greater HPU community. In 2021, I was appointed to the NCMS Medical Education Committee where I serve as a site visitor for accreditation review of CME.
Currently, I serve as a clinical coordinator for Duke’s PA Program while assisting with course instruction. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I provide service to the university through being a Co-Chair of the professionalism committee and being an active member of the promotions, admissions, and curriculum committees. Outside of my teaching role, I am currently a committee member of the NCAPA PDRP. This past spring, I delivered the Overview of the PA Profession at the NCAPA Pre-PA Fair for NC HBCU Students. I also enjoy volunteering as a chat moderator for the PAEA PA Virtual Fair.
In my personal life, I enjoy giving back to the community that has supported me throughout the years. I dedicate my time to volunteering at church during the children’s summer camp and by delivering presentations about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment to educate those in our community. In summer of 2022, I was asked to be a panelist for the Women in Science Educational Talk geared towards underrepresented, female high school students. Lastly, I dedicate my time to mentoring pre-PA students who are preparing to apply to PA school.
As you can see, I am committed to the profession in a variety of ways. I am dedicated to the state of North Carolina. As a provider, a preceptor, and a professor, I know that I can apply the skills I have gained throughout my journey to the role as Member-at-Large for the Nominating Committee and would sincerely appreciate your vote.
