Interested in serving on one of the NCAPA committees?
Many of our members wish to get more involved with the Academy and apply to serve on one of our many committees. Committee service provides members with opportunities to connect with their peers across the state, provide meaningful contributions to the profession, and gain valuable leadership experience.
NCAPA recruits committee members in the late summer/early fall for the following year. Committee assignments are on a calendar year basis and occur during the fall of each year for the upcoming calendar year. Committee Chairs are appointed by the President-Elect.
The following NCAPA committees have been established by the NCAPA Board of Directors. All corporate powers will be exercised by, or under the authority of, the Board of Directors.

The Continuing Education Committee (CEC) is the “educational arm” of NCAPA and is responsible for the development and implementation of all NCAPA CME activities, including two annual conferences, regional workshops, and online education. The CEC has 1 overarching Committee Chair, Joshua F. Smith, PA-C, who is expected to attend NCAPA Board of Directors meetings and works directly with the NCAPA Director of Education to assist with the annual budgeting process and to ensure educational activities are executed smoothly and with attendee satisfaction.
The committee consists of three panels, the Conference Management Panel (CMP), the Professional Development Review Panel (PDRP), and the Educational Development Panel (EDP).
The NCAPA Conference Management Panel (CMP) works to ensure NCAPA’s annual conferences run smoothly and have high attendee satisfaction. Members of the panel work together to coordinate activities, handle onsite check-in of attendees, moderate lectures, and act as overall conference ambassadors.
CMP Roles and Expectations
The CMP consists of a Chair and a maximum of 7 additional members. The panel typically meets virtually twice per year and meets onsite at the Summer Conference.
The CMP Chair works with the NCAPA Director of Education to arrange and lead CMP meetings, make financial decisions, and to assist with the annual budget. The Chair also organizes and helps define roles and responsibilities of the CMP members.
Panel members are expected to attend all meetings, participate in discussions, and assist in all ways necessary during conference events. This includes assisting with set up and clean up of the conferences, assist with onsite check-in, and assisting with any questions attendees may have throughout the conference. Members are also responsible for managing at least one extracurricular event at Summer Conference and may be asked to moderate lectures.

The NCAPA Professional Development Review Panel (PDRP) works to ensure NCAPA’s annual conferences provide engaging speakers and excellent CME. Members of the panel work together to select speakers for each conference from a wide variety of submitted proposals. Upon acceptance, speaker presentations are reviewed and feedback is provided by the panel prior to being finalized to ensure that outstanding peer-led, peer-driven content is provided to attendees.
PDRP Roles and Expectations
The PDRP consists of a Chair and 5-10 members on average. The panel typically meets four times a year through virtual zoom meetings.
The PDRP Chair works with the NCAPA Director of Education to arrange and lead panel meetings and to make final decisions if a consensus cannot be met within the group.
Panel members are expected to attend all meetings, participate in discussions regarding speaker and topic selection, and review and provide speaker feedback on assigned presentations.

The panel works together to vet proposals, select speakers and topics, and to ensure that outstanding peer-led, peer-driven content is provided to attendees.
EDP Roles and Expectations
The EDP consists of a Chair and 5-8 members on average. The panel typically meets four times a year through virtual zoom meetings.
The EDP Chair works with the NCAPA Director of Education to arrange and lead panel meetings and to determine what to present to the panel for review. The Chair is also responsible for making final decisions if a consensus cannot be met within the group.
Panel members are expected to attend all meetings and reply to all emails and action items in a timely manner. Members are encouraged to bring ideas to the group, participate in discussions, and be open to new ideas regarding speaker and topic selection.

The NCAPA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee works to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion within NCAPA and the PA profession through professional development, providing education on health disparities, and outreach to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Committee members serve on the committee as a whole but can also choose to serve on one or more subcommittees:
- DE&I Professional Development works to ensure that 100% of NCAPA leaders and committee members receive annual bias training with the hope that awareness of biases will lead to less harm when interacting with others through policies, hiring practices, etc.
- Health Disparities CME provides recommendations for speakers and content related to health disparities.
- HBCU Outreach works to form productive partnerships with all 11 North Carolina HBCUs to increase visibility of the PA profession and impact diverse recruitment.
Committee Roles and Expectations
The DE&I committee is currently the largest of the NCAPA committees, consisting of two Co-Chairs and 18 additional members. The full committee typically meets an average of four times a year (quarterly) through virtual zoom meetings, with subcommittees meeting every other month or as needed.
The DE&I Committee Chairs are expected to attend all NCAPA board of directors meetings (4-5 times annually) and work with the NCAPA staff liaison to create the annual budget and to assist with planning and board reports.
Committee members are expected to be respectful and open-minded, particularly when having difficult conversations, and to always advocate for DE&I within PA programs and the PA profession at large. They are also expected to attend all committee meetings and review and reply to all committee communications in a timely manner.

The NCAPA Finance Committee oversees the Academy’s finances. The committee understands that financial statements, budgets, and accounting can be intimidating to many PAs and assists its members to become more comfortable in these areas. The committee serves in an internal audit capacity and provides oversight to the annual budgetary income and expenses, the Building Maintenance Fund, the Strategic Projects Fund, and the Reserve Fund. The committee works closely with the NCAPA Treasurer and the Executive Director and administrative staff to ensure that resources are utilized in a manner consistent with the strategic plan.
Committee Roles and Expectations
Per NCAPA policy, the Finance Committee will not exceed a total of nine members and the NCAPA President, President-Elect, Treasurer, and Continuing Education Committee Chair are automatic members of the committee. The committee typically meets an average of 3-4 times a year through virtual zoom meetings, to review financial statements, proposed budgets, and to review annual financial review or audit statements.
The Finance Committee Chair runs committee meetings and is also expected to attend all NCAPA board of directors’ meetings (4-5 times annually). The Chair works with the NCAPA staff liaison to create the proposed annual budget, board reports, and to assist with any financial questions that may arise. The Chair may also have the occasional need to approve proposed, unforeseen expenditures from one of the special funds.
Committee members are expected to attend committee meetings, review and reply to all committee communications, and participate in the budgeting process as necessary and as is possible. Committee members should also be able to review financial statements each month and document that this has been done (10-15 minutes per month). Committee members are NOT expected to be accountants and questions are always welcome.

The NCAPA Government Affairs Committee works to assure that North Carolina has a practice environment beneficial to PAs and remains one of the best states to practice. The committee reviews and makes recommendations on issues related to statutes, regulatory, and reimbursement as they affect PAs and the profession in North Carolina.
Each year, the committee creates a Legislative Agenda and plans and coordinates the Annual PA Day at the NC Legislature. The committee also currently has a subcommittee focused on Behavioral Health and includes professional liaisons to the NC Medical Board Review Panel and the Emergency Medical Services Advisory Group.
Committee Roles and Expectations
The committee currently consists of a Chair and 15 members. The committee typically meets an average of four times a year through virtual zoom meetings.
The Government Affairs Committee Chair is expected to attend all NCAPA board of directors meetings (4-5 times annually) and works with the NCAPA Executive Director to create the annual budget and to assist with planning and board reports. The Chair also interacts often with the NCAPA lobbyists to strategize towards committee goals.
Committee members are expected to attend all committee meetings, review and reply to all committee communications, and participate in the Annual PA Day at the NC Legislature. Members are also strongly encouraged to contribute to the NCAPA PAC and have the option of attending meetings at the NC Medical Board.

These resources include the development of health and wellness CME and sharing current wellness resources with NCAPA members. The committee recommends speakers for NCAPA conferences and provides wellness programming.

The NCAPA Regional Chapters Committee provides two-way communication between NCAPA and the Regional Chapters, providing support to the chapters throughout the state and ensuring that policies and charters are current. The NCAPA Student Affairs Committee acts as a liaison to North Carolina PA programs and represents the concerns of the PA student community while supporting efforts in achieving academic excellence, proficiency, and social interaction. The committee guides and supports all student events, including the Annual Student Challenge Bowl and Student Leadership Retreat.
The committee currently includes two work groups:
- Student DE&I Taskforce provides outreach to NC high schools to improve diversity of students attending PA programs.
- Pre-PA Membership Taskforce assists in developing resources for Pre-PA members

The committee consists of a Chair and an average of 15 members. The committee typically meets every other month through virtual zoom meetings. Student events are typically held in person, onsite at the Stead Center.
The Student Affairs Committee Chair is expected to attend all NCAPA board of directors meetings (4-5 times annually) and works with the NCAPA staff liaison to create the annual budget and board reports. The Chair also directs the planning of the two annual student events and may also act as moderator/host to either or both events.
