Educator, leader, and breast-cancer survivor shaping the next generation of PAs
As the Founding Program Director at South University, Chileatha Wynn has dedicated her career to advancing PA education and mentoring future clinicians. But beyond her professional success lies a powerful story of strength, gratitude, and faith, one that has taken on even deeper meaning since her breast cancer diagnosis in 2024.
Finding the PAth
Dr. Wynn’s path to medicine began with a passion for patient care and a drive to make a difference. Over the past two decades, she has built an impressive career spanning transplant surgery, family medicine, urgent care and clinical education. Her leadership journey ultimately led her to South University, where she has been appointed as the inaugural Program Director for their developing PA program
“I’ve always believed in paying forward the knowledge and experiences that shaped me,” she shared. “Seeing students grow into compassionate, capable clinicians reminds me daily why this work matters.”
For Dr. Wynn, education isn’t just about academics, it’s about character, connection, and purpose. “As faculty, we’re not only teaching medicine; we’re teaching perseverance, empathy, and resilience,” she said. “Those lessons reach far beyond the classroom.”
A Journey of Resilience
In 2024, Dr. Wynn’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. True to her nature, she faced the news with faith and determination.
“Early detection is key,” she emphasized. “It changes treatment options; it changes life expectancy.”
Throughout her treatment and recovery, Dr. Wynn found strength in the support of her loved ones and colleagues. “A life surrounded by love and really good people is truly living,” she reflected. “That’s what kept me going on the hardest days.”
Her journey has also deepened the empathy she brings to her work as an educator and clinician. “Being on the other side of the stethoscope reminded me how important it is to see people fully, beyond their diagnosis,” she said. “That’s the kind of care I want my students to deliver.”
Guiding the Next Generation
As Program Director, Dr. Wynn continues to lead by example, fostering an environment where students feel supported academically and personally. Her approach blends high expectations with compassion, helping students discover both their competence and confidence.
“It’s important for students to see that life happens, and that strength isn’t the absence of struggle, it’s how we move through it,” she said.
A Message for October
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Wynn’s story serves as both an inspiration and a reminder. “Get your screenings. Know your body. Talk to your doctor,” she urged. “Early detection can save your life—it saved mine.”
Through her leadership in PA education, her faith, and her resilience, Dr. Chileatha Wynn, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C embodies what it means to lead with purpose and perseverance, proving that even in the face of challenge, strength and compassion can guide the way forward. She will continue this style of leadership as the new president-elect of the NCAPA for 2027.
