Focus on Fifty: Robert Wooten, PA-C

June 16, 2026 by Tommy Wellenhofer

As we continue celebrating 50 years of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Associates, we turn our focus to the members whose vision and dedication have helped strengthen the profession for future generations.

The Focus on Fifty series is about the people behind the progress—those who have invested their time, leadership, and resources to ensure that PAs across North Carolina continue to have opportunities to grow, serve, and succeed.

This month, we’re proud to highlight Robert Wooten, PA-C, past NCAPA President, former President of AAPA, and current chair of the NCAPA Endowment.

A Lifetime of Service

Robert Wooten’s involvement with NCAPA began shortly after graduating from the Wake Forest PA Program in 1981.

Like many new graduates, he was focused on building his career and wasn’t initially involved with professional organizations. That changed when a colleague encouraged him to attend an NCAPA meeting.

“I went to a meeting and when I left, I was on the Public Education Committee,” Wooten recalled.

What started as a committee assignment quickly became a lifelong commitment to the profession. Wooten went on to serve on the NCAPA Board of Directors, become President of NCAPA, and later serve as President of the American Academy of PAs. Today, he continues to give back through his leadership of the NCAPA Endowment.

Investing in the Future

While advocacy and education are often the most visible parts of a professional association, Wooten believes the Endowment plays an equally important role in supporting the profession’s future.

Established to provide resources that benefit both PAs and the communities they serve, the NCAPA Endowment funds initiatives that extend beyond the classroom and legislative chambers.

The Endowment supports community grants, regional chapter activities, scholarships for PA students, and assistance programs designed to help PAs facing personal challenges. Through these programs, the Endowment helps strengthen the profession while creating opportunities for service and growth across North Carolina.

“We wanted to meet the needs of PAs as well as the community,” Wooten explained. “Working in the community and helping the community is important.”

Supporting Students Across North Carolina

One of the Endowment’s most visible impacts can be found in its student scholarship program.

As the number of PA programs across North Carolina has grown, the Endowment has continued its commitment to supporting students through scholarship opportunities at every PA program in the state. Each year, students can apply for scholarship funding, helping ease some of the financial burden that comes with pursuing a PA education.

For Wooten, supporting students is an investment in the future of healthcare and the profession itself.

Giving Back to the Profession

The success of the Endowment depends on the support of individuals who believe in its mission.

Whether funding scholarships, supporting community outreach efforts, assisting regional chapters, or providing resources for PAs in need, every contribution helps extend the Endowment’s impact across the state.

Wooten encourages all PAs to learn more about the Endowment and the opportunities it creates for students, practitioners, and communities alike.

Looking Ahead

As someone who has spent more than four decades in clinical practice and over twenty years in PA education, Wooten has seen firsthand how the profession has evolved. Through it all, he remains focused on supporting the next generation of PAs.

His advice to students is simple: stay committed, take care of yourself, and don’t be afraid to seek help when you need it.

“PA school is one of the toughest things you’ll do,” he said. “But once you get through it, you’ve got a tremendous career ahead of you.”

Focus on Fifty is about recognizing the people whose leadership continues to shape where we are today and where we are headed tomorrow.

Robert Wooten’s story is a reminder that building a stronger profession isn’t just about the work we do today—it’s about investing in the people who will carry it forward.

Fifty years in, that investment continues.
