Happy New Year!
2018 promises to be an active and productive year at NCAPA. Our fantastic staff can attest how true that is! We are actively crafting next steps on our 3-year Strategic Plan that the Board approved unanimously in November. An Optimal Team Practice (OTP) Task Force has been created to assess how to best move forward in the current healthcare environment to ensure that PAs are working on high functioning teams. Our Legislative Agenda and priorities are being determined. We are getting closer to a launch of online learning and refining our conference style and curriculum to meet needs and adapt to changing requirements. And, we are continuing to grow our membership numbers- perhaps the most exciting news item of all because our members drive so much of what we are able to do for all PAs in North Carolina. So, keep spreading the word and following us on social media, specifically Facebook and Instagram. NCAPA wants to increase our membership even more! We want to represent,not just in theory but in fact, ALL PAs in North Carolina.
Keep in mind that all of our Board of Directors meetings are open to any NCAPA member and consider attending our next Board meeting in Durham on January 27th. We are always looking for future leaders. You may just decide that you want to take your involvement to the next level and join a committee or run for an elected position on the Board of Directors.
I plan to share a leadership quote with you in each edition of the Pulse. I particularly love this from John Maxwell, one of the most respected voices in the study of Leadership. I think it is particularly pertinent to medicine and how we work together in teams. May you be inspired today by his words:

Legislative Updates: Opioid Prescribing Changes Effective January 1, 2018

The effective date of legislation varies from bill to bill. Some bills go into effect immediately upon the Governor’s signature into law, while other bills may not go into effect for six months or even a couple of years. The STOP Act bill contained several provisions with different effective dates. The majority of the provisions, like the one requiring pain management PAs and NPs to personally consult with their supervising physician prior to prescribing opioids, went into effect on July 1, 2017.
Beginning January 1, 2018, all providers (DOs, MDs, NPs, PAs) are limited to prescribing no more than a five-day supply of opioids upon the initial consultation and treatment for acute pain. This limitation is expanded to seven days for post-operative acute pain relief. Upon any subsequent consultation for the same pain, providers may prescribe any appropriate supply of opioids to the patient.
The law also explicitly states that providers who act in accordance with the prescription limitations are immune from any civil liability or disciplinary from the North Carolina Medical Board, as long as they are practicing within the limitations of the law.
It is important to note that these prescribing limits do not apply to opioid prescriptions if they are wholly administered in a hospital, nursing home, hospice facility, or residential care facility.

2018 NCAPA Winter Conference | Core Medical Knowledge & PANRE Review
February 24-27, 2018

The Winter Conference agenda is based on the NCCPA PANRE exam blueprint and will be geared toward a basic review of all organ systems. Even if you are not up for recertification or don’t take the PANRE, this conference is an excellent review of core medical knowledge for any health care provider. Click here to see the full agenda.
Accreditation
The NCAPA plans to request 30 AAPA Category 1 CME credits for the general sessions and additional hours in workshops from the PA Review Panel. The total number of CME credits is yet to be determined.
Credits awarded by the AAPA are accepted by the ANCC Certification Program and the AANP as Continuing Education (CE) credits for nurses and nurse practitioners.

2018 NCAPA Job Fair
It’s time for NCAPA’s Annual Job Fair on February 23, 2018 from 3:00 – 6:00pm at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham. This is the Friday prior to our Winter Conference that begins the following day, on Saturday, February 24th.

We realize that 2018 has only just begun, but it’s never too soon to start thinking about the future! The NCAPA Nominating Committee is soliciting candidates for the 2019 Board of Directors and Nominating Committee. Serving on the NCAPA Board is an important way to contribute to your profession and a wonderful leadership experience. North Carolina became a great state in which to practice as a PA through the vision, leadership, and volunteer work of PAs just like you!
If you know a PA who cares deeply and wants to contribute to the future of the profession, who is a good listener, collaborator, and decision maker—or if you are that person—please submit a nomination for a position on the NCAPA Board of Directors.
The following positions for elected offices are open for nominees: President-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary, Director-At-Large (two positions), and a Nominating Committee Member. To read more about these positions and to nominate yourself or a colleague, click here. The deadline for nominating a colleague is May 31, 2018. The deadline for nominating yourself is August 1, 2018.
All terms begin January 1, 2019. Nominees for officer positions (President-Elect, Vice-President, and Secretary) must have been an NCAPA Fellow member in good standing for the calendar year prior to election. All other nominees must have been a Fellow or Associate member.
NCAPA Endowment Student Scholarship Recipients: Campbell University
The NCAPA Endowment congratulates Ms. Amanda Taylor as the 2017 NCAPA Endowment scholarship recipient for the Campbell University PA Program. A first-generation college student, Amanda completed her undergraduate studies at Campbell as well. Her involvement in community service projects runs the gamut from food drives to Adopt-a-Highway to Make-A-Wish to Give Kids a Smile and many more. It seems that she never tires of energetically involving herself in actions for the benefit of others. Amanda serves as the Campbell program’s student representative to the NCAPA.
Ms. Taylor in inspired by her upbringing in a small town and aspires to work in rural primary care. Not surprisingly she intends to continue in leadership after she graduates from PA school—undoubtedly, her effort and energy will be welcome!
